November 16 & 17
Studio gallery open 10am to 5pm each day
Bonjour from my French studio! 🇫🇷 I'm artist-in-residence here in the beautiful Medieval village of Noyers in Burgundy during October, painting outdoors or in a fabulous Medieval barn loft, complete with supervising cat! I’ll be back in Bowral for November, with lots of new work to show during the Southern Highlands Arts Trail 2024.
Do pop in to view original artworks, new paintings and drawings from recent art travels, mixed media work and beautiful quality limited edition fine art prints on stretched canvas and paper, framed or affordably mounted in various sizes. There's something for everyone. Come in and say hi, enjoy a local pastry and a glass of bubbles!
Address: 103 Merrigang St (on the corner of Elm St) Bowral
Look for the studio entry on Elm St. You'll be warmly welcomed by the studio dogs - and me! There's ample parking and level access from Elm St to the studio.

Holiday Greetings From The Studio!
Easter 2024
What a wonderful time we had last weekend at the Best of City and Country Art Awards in Bowral. All 3 of my entered artworks were selected for the final exhibition; with 50% of their purchase prices donated to the Bowral District Children’s Foundation. With over $6,000 raised so far, the online exhibition continues and you can still purchase artwork via this link: https://thepopupproject.com.au/bocca-exhibition/
I was extra happy to see “Paris 7am (Heatwave)” going to a new home. Thanks Scott!
A Glimpse Into The Year Ahead...
I’m making the most of my time in the studio over the holiday break before my son’s wedding and an art trip to Turkey and Portugal. Stay tuned for Instagram and Facebook updates full of adventure and art created on site (in Turkey and Portugal – not at the wedding!)
Although I’ll still be away during the PopUp Project’s Open Studio Weekend in June, I’m looking forward to preparing for my next (regional) art adventure: a solo exhibition at stunning Centennial Vineyards in Bowral this August.
Thanks to owners John and Mark and to our own PopUp Project superwoman Erin for the opportunity to show art in this unique exhibition environment! Great wine, art and community. I hope you can pop in during August!
More details soon...

The Studio Flood Relief Fundraiser
May 2022
Huge thanks to all the April buyers of artworks!
A number of paintings, mixed media works and drawings found new owners in Victoria and NSW in April! The generous art collectors' purchases enabled the donation of almost $3000 of additional funds to Givit for flood relief - resulting in a donation total from the studio of just under $5000. Thank you, art lovers!

#ArtForFloods - and Cathy’s Flood Relief Fundraiser
April 2022
With thousands of lives, homes, possessions and livelihoods badly impacted by the flooding in Australia's east, others need help urgently. That’s why I’m donating 100% of any April art sales to Givit for flood relief in NSW.
To start, Moonlit was auctioned in association with the #ArtForFloods flood relief fundraiser (https://www.artforfloods.com/artist-c-g#/cathy-shugg/).
Moonlit’s reserve was $750 and bids closed at midnight on 3rd April, 2022. Enormous thanks to all the generous bidders: it raised a massive $2100! Artforfloods had a host of other artists involved too; to date over $150000 has been raised!
So far, my April sales of other paintings have raised another $1000+ to go via Givit for NSW flood relief. Watch this space for updates!

January 2020: 30th Annual Art of Sydney Awards Exhibition
I’m thrilled to have three pieces exhibited at the 30th Annual Art of Sydney Awards Exhibition at the National Maritime Museum - and I’ll need to “frock up” to receive a Commended award from the Governor of NSW on January 25th!
Do visit if you’re in the vicinity of Sydney’s Darling Harbour on the Australia Day long weekend – you’re invited!

#artaid for Australian fire relief
With so many Australians suffering through our worst bushfire season on record, I’m donating 100 percent of all my January art sales to the Australian Red Cross - including any Art of Sydney sales.
Sincere thanks to the wonderful art lovers who are being so supportive with purchases and encouragement! With four pieces already finding new homes in Australia and overseas since the New Year, there are still many original artworks available – large and small, framed and unframed.
Check out my website pages, Facebook and Instagram (@cathy_shugg) and get in touch by email or message to enquire about availability and prices. You’re welcome to view the art in person at my studio-gallery in St Ives in Sydney too.

2020 Outback Art Escapes
I’m teaming up with Kinrara Expeditions for their first ever Outback Art Escapes, over two weeks in late April. Painters of all levels and non-painters are all welcome to join me on these 5 and 6-day adventures in this unique and incredibly diverse outback environment, departing from Cairns in Far North Queensland. Click on https://www.cathyshugg.com/art-trips.html for an introduction. More details to come soon.

Last but not least, the wonderful City of Willoughby has invited me to hold a second solo exhibition at its iconic Incinerator Art Space this September! Watch out for more details about Light Colour Joy soon.
Best wishes, Cathy

February 2019: France - Histoires solo exhibition in Sydney
30th January - 10th February
January 2019....WHAT’S NEW?
Greetings from my Sydney studio, where I'm busy putting the finishing touches on work from my recent art residency in fascinating Eygalières, deep in rural Provence. I'm also revisiting my art from my time in Champagne-Ardenne.
Greetings from my Sydney studio, where I'm busy putting the finishing touches on work from my recent art residency in fascinating Eygalières, deep in rural Provence. I'm also revisiting my art from my time in Champagne-Ardenne.
Both regions are full of inspiration: fascinating people, stunning natural and farm landscapes, architecture and history. My new work delves into them all, with watercolours created on location and subsequent studio pieces created from the work done en plein air and inspired by my encounters and experiences while I was living there.
France: Histoires ....... Is that a typo?
Not at all! Histoires means stories or histories.
The title reflects how my paintings often tell stories of small moments in time, places and personal experiences. My works for this show also reflect on the relationship between France's natural environment and her culture and history.
THANKS!
Councillor Gail Giles-Gidney, Mayor of the City of Willoughby, will be officially opening France: Histoires on 2nd February around 3pm. She and her team at Willoughby Council are doing great things for art on Sydney's North Shore and I'm honoured that she has agreed to be involved in my exhibition.
Painting in Provence seems a world away from painting in the snow in Antarctica earlier this year! It was wonderful to see so many visitors in Balmain, Sydney, sharing my Fire & Ice Antarctica solo show. We hugely appreciated the support - and the brilliant talk given by our inspirational guest speaker, Antarctic veteran Professor Ian Goodwin.
Best wishes,
Cathy Shugg

August 2018: Fire & Ice Solo Exhibition

You are warmly invited to my upcoming Fire and Ice exhibition, opening on Monday 27th August at Art Gallery on Darling in Balmain for just one week. The very entertaining Professor Ian Goodwin will be joining us to share tales of Antarctica over drinks on Saturday 1st September.
Also…….
20% of all sales from Fire and Ice will be donated to the Australian Red Cross’s appeal for urgently needed drought relief!
This is apt when you consider that Antarctica, the inspiration for Fire and Ice, is the driest continent on Earth.
(Not that the penguins mind…..)

Cathy Shugg, an AGOD favourite, returns to the gallery this week
Fire and Ice - a new exhibition of work by Cathy Shugg opens this week in the gallery. Cathy’s inspiration for her latest exhibition was a voyage to Antarctica in January 2018. Fascinated all her life by the frozen continent’s history, geology and wildlife, she painted and drew on site in Antarctica at every opportunity – in the snow amongst penguins, on the shores of an active volcano, on the ship’s deck crossing the Antarctic Circle.
Cathy’s Fire and Ice artworks range from pieces created en plein air in Antarctica to larger mixed media abstracts and landscapes developed later in her Sydney studio. Using her trademark colour and variety of media and techniques, Cathy explores the dynamic nature of Antarctica and our relationship with this least-known of continents. It’s definitely not all white!
Cathy has recently been awarded an Artist Residency with NG Art in Provence. She is a feature artist and tutor with Painting Holidays Asia and conducts bespoke workshops and art trips. Her contemporary paintings and works on paper have earned numerous awards in local and regional art shows. Cathy has been a finalist in the Hunters Hill, Blacktown, Waverley Woollahra, Hornsby, Taree and Sydney Royal art prizes.
On Saturday September 1 Cathy will be joined by climatologist and Antarctic veteran Professor Ian Goodwin, who will share some of his own fascinating experiences and knowledge of Antarctica over a glass of Shiraz. Do pop in from 3-6pm!
Fire and Ice by Cathy Shugg will be open from Monday to Sunday from 10am-6pm between 27 August and 2 September.

February 2017: Far & Away Solo Exhibition

Balmain
ART GALLERY ON DARLING Presents Cathy Shugg
Far & Away 6 – 12 February
Mixed media artist, painter, teacher and self-confessed gypsy wanderer Cathy Shugg is endlessly inspired by the world around her:
“My art is a response to life experiences, wherever they happen.”
She works en plein air whenever possible. Later in her Sydney studio, she develops larger pieces and new series of work that spring from those experiences.
The artworks in Far & Away have many inspirations: live music, flying over Hawaii by moonlight, golf and walking in tropical hills, “hanging out” with her sketchbook on Vietnamese streets, farms and rivers, and even the mysterious activities of archaeologists at temples in Cambodia.
Cathy’s colourful works on paper and canvas range from paintings and collages to mixed media pieces, demonstrating a broad spectrum of styles. Significant influences are Matisse and the Fauves, Franz Marc, Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Eric Carle and David Larwill.
Far & Away is the first of 4 solo or 2-artist shows in Sydney and Brisbane in 2017 for Cathy. She has been awarded an artist residency in Champagne in May and is feature artist and tutor with Painting Holidays Co for trips to Cambodia, Vietnam and Japan in 2017-18.
