Mixed media artist, painter, teacher and self-confessed gypsy wanderer Cathy Shugg is endlessly inspired by the world around her:
“My art is a response to life experiences, wherever they happen.”
She works en plein air whenever possible. Later in her Sydney studio, she develops larger pieces and new series of work that spring from those experiences.
The artworks in Far & Away have many inspirations: live music, flying over Hawaii by moonlight, golf and walking in tropical hills, “hanging out” with her sketchbook on Vietnamese streets, farms and rivers, and even the mysterious activities of archaeologists at temples in Cambodia.
Cathy’s colourful works on paper and canvas range from paintings and collages to mixed media pieces, demonstrating a broad spectrum of styles. Significant influences are Matisse and the Fauves, Franz Marc, Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Eric Carle and David Larwill.
Far & Away is the first of 4 solo or 2-artist shows in Sydney and Brisbane in 2017 for Cathy. She has been awarded an artist residency in Champagne in May and is feature artist and tutor with Painting Holidays Co for trips to Cambodia, Vietnam and Japan in 2017-18.
